Baylor Scott & White – All Saints offers a four-week sub-internship in hospital medicine

Students will spend their time on an inpatient hospitalists teaching service where they will be exposed to a diverse population of clinically complex patients.

Rotations

Working at BSW All Saints Hospital provides a unique opportunity to experience a wide variety of pathologies, ranging from common medical issues like diabetes and pneumonia to organ transplants and complex structural heart disease.

The Inpatient Medicine Sub-I experience at Baylor Scott and White All Saints allows students the ability to practice core clinical skills including recognizing sick vs non-sick patients, knowing when to ask for assistance, managing time wisely and communicating effectively within the health care team.

Rotation experience


Sub-Interns will participate in morning report, noon didactics, conferences, M&Ms as outlined in their schedule.

Sub-Interns will maintain all of the typical intern responsibilities including/ such as:

  • Participate in daily rounds
    • Take a thorough history and perform physical exam
    • Retrieve clinical information from the Electronic Medical Records and other sources
    • Present patients during Multidisciplinary Huddles and Teaching Rounds
    • Review orders with the supervising resident or attending preceptor
    • Communicate with consultants and other health care team members
    • Work cooperatively to formulate plans for inpatient management as well as post-hospital discharge care
    • Finalize treatment plans
    • Enter all documentation in the medical record
  • Cultivate the physician patient relationship
  • Learn to navigate health care systems
  • Identify a patient with an interesting finding to research for the end of rotation case presentation.

Interdisciplinary rounding experience


Sub-Interns will participate in interdisciplinary huddles discussing care plans with case management, social worker, pharmacy, therapy, nutrition, and other ancillary staff.

  • Sub-Intern will spend 2-4 hours with Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapists to learn their role in the hospital and understand the recommendations and their importance in patient care.
  • Sub-Intern will spend 2 hours with Nutrition services to review the basics of enteral and parenteral nutrition, malnutrition identification, and treatment.
  • Sub-Intern will spend 2 hours with the Comprehensive Care Management team to review the process of discharge planning, identify potential hurdles in the discharge process and develop comprehensive care plans based on the information provided during Multidisciplinary Huddle.
  • Sub-Intern will spend 2-4 hours with a pharmacist to learn about biomedical science, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, principles of drug action, and basic concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications.

End of rotation case presentation


The Sub Intern will work closely with one or more teaching faculty members to prepare a case presentation that incorporates evidence-based medicine resources to address a focused clinical finding for an interesting patient that the Sub-Intern cared for during the rotation.
