Specialized care for complicated infections

Pediatric infectious disease specialists treat children with uncommon or serious infections. These can be infections that are difficult to identify, are hard to treat, or are complicating another condition like prematurity or cancer. We also care for children with compromised immune systems.

If your pediatrician thinks your child has a complicated infection, he or she may refer you to the pediatric infectious disease team at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's.

The pediatric infectious disease team is also involved in research projects—such as yearly influenza studies—to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat infectious diseases.

Infectious diseases we treat
Our doctors treat difficult infections and rare infectious diseases. We also coordinate care for children with weakened immune systems. In addition to surgical infections and antibiotic/antimicrobial-resistant disease, we treat:
Unusual infections
These conditions are usually identified by the presence of a fever that lasts unusually long or a set of symptoms that are not commonly found together.
Drug-resistant infections
Our team coordinates care for kids who’ve contracted drug-resistant infections, including community-acquired methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Immunocompromised children
Children with cancer, primary immune deficiency disorders, or HIV/AIDS and premature babies have weakened immune systems. This makes them more likely to catch common germs and makes even simple conditions, like a cold, potentially serious illnesses. Our infectious disease team coordinates care for these children to help them avoid or control infection and to treat their illness as early as possible.
