Our team uses extensive surgical expertise and advanced imaging to diagnose and devise treatment plans for various heart valve disorders, including: mitral valve regurgitation, aortic stenosis, mitral stenosis, aortic insufficiency, tricuspid valve disease, aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection.

​Surgical procedures:​​

Although medications may be used to treat the symptoms of heart valve disease, like a leaky heart valve, they cannot cure it. The most effective treatments are the repair or replacement of malfunctioning valves.

We offer a complete range of traditional surgical heart valve procedures, as well as minimally invasive surgical and catheter-based management of aortic and mitral valve disease. Interventional procedures usually result in less scarring, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery for most patients.
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
  • Transcatheter mitral valve repair with MitraClip®
  • Robotic-assisted surgery for mitral valve repair
  • Ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure (post-surgical or post-infarction)
  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) closure
  • Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

The Heart Valve Center specializes in the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a procedure offered to patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who are not candidates for traditional open chest surgery or are high-risk operable candidates.

Patients who are candidates for TAVR include those with:

  • Critical​ aortic stenosis
  • Advanced age
  • Frailty or debility
  • Cerebral and peripheral vascular disease​, lung disease and other co-morbidities

Patients who are turned down for conventional aortic valve surgery may also be candidates.​​​​

Caring for your heart as a team

We perform this procedure with general anesthesia in a hybrid suite, which has both catheterization and surgical capabilities. A team of interventional cardiologists and imaging specialists, heart surgeons and cardiac anesthesiologists work together, utilizing fluoroscopy and echocardiography to guide the valve to the site of the patient's diseased heart valve.
